Miami to Vero Beach

April 9, 2015

I want to go to Miami!

Admiral Susan and Admiral Pat

Marc and Susan

This morning we worked on our blog, checked emails, and sifted through the pictures we have been taking with our new camera.  The winds continue out of the east with temps in the low 80s, partly cloudy skies, and one light shower this morning.  “Reflection’ pulled away from the dock at 12 noon (very late for us) and we were on our way to visit our friends, Marc & Susan Einbinder, who have a lovely home in Aventura, just north of Miami.  We met them several years ago when we were speakers at both the Miami and Palm Beach Boat Shows, and they were enthusiastic members of our audiences.  We kept in touch with them, and this is the second time that we are taking advantage of their kind offer to have us dock at their home. Marc and Susan bought their Meridien 54’, “Joint Venture”, last summer in Montauk, Long Island, and brought it south from there in phases over a period of several months.  They visited with us at our home in New Jersey, and we met up again in Solomons, Maryland, and Chesapeake, Virginia, and then travelled south with them from there until Oriental, North Carolina on our annual journey to Marathon, Florida.  Our trip from Coral Reef to their home was only 23 miles, but it took almost three hours due to some bridge openings.  Susan was waiting aboard their boat to help us tie up side to side, and she was accompanied by her “Schnoodle” (Schnauzer and Poodle Mix) dog, Willie.  When Marc arrived home from work ( a CPA at tax-time!) , as well as their daughter, Megan, we all went out to dinner to a Cuban restaurant for a delicious Cuban dinner.  However, the “Grand Finale” of this terrific evening was a show given by “Willie the Wonder Dog”. At Megan’s urging, he ran UP a plastic children’s slide, turned around, then ran down, and successfully took flight over a 4’ high jump Megan had placed there!!!  This was truly a fantastic ending for our great visit with these gracious people!

Boynton Beach Ocean Avenue Bridge

At 6:45 a.m. we untied from “Joint Venture” and backed out of their canal into Lake Maule.  Our trip today will take us 63 miles up the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW) under 29 bridges – 9 of which MUST open for us because of our boat’s height.  We often take the ocean route north during this portion of the trip, but the sea conditions today were not conducive for us to do so.  On this inside route, planning is everything regarding bridge heights and timing their opening schedules. We did very well, despite an extra ½ hour wait at the Flagler Memorial Bridge in West Palm Beach due to construction, and anchored in one of our favorite anchorages at 4:30 p.m.  This spot is hidden away from the AICW, and is adjacent to a golf course and surrounded by lovely homes (and, yes, we were 200’ away from every single one of them – for those of you who are familiar with the proposed future Florida anchoring law!).

The Moorings Yacht Club

After a quiet evening, we lifted anchor at 6:50 a.m. for a 61 mile trip north to The Moorings Yacht club in Vero Beach.  We have been there a number of times before, and it gives us the chance to see our friends, Linda Barberi, and Nancy Husbands, who both have condos at this Yacht and Country Club, and we have known their families for over 40 years, when we, Linda’s late husband, Gus, and Nancy were members of the Bristol Sailing Club in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and we all served in some capacity as officers of the club over a substantial period of time. Tonight, Linda’s friend, Bob, also joined us aboard for cocktails, and then we all went out for dinner to "Johnny Dee’s” restaurant in Vero for a delicious (and substantial) Italian dinner.  It was another terrific day!

  1. I remember it all very well! And yes, tax season is all consuming.
